The Elks have a distinctive blend of charitable activities and social
life. In part, this reflects the historical
context of when the order was founded. From an informal drinking
club founded by actors, the Elks have grown to be the largest source
of scholarships after the US government.
This is but one of our many benevolent activities, both local and national.
However, a glance at our lodge calendar
reveals this is only part of the Elks' appeal. An Elks lodge is a noncommercial
space where members from all walks of life discover and enjoy common
ground. The lodge is a place where, as the final section of Elk
Advantages discusses, people find "community & connection."
Perhaps because of this sense of community, our charitable
and benevolent activities are extensive.
