Local Activities
Harrison Fund for College Scholarships
Nationwide, the Elks are the largest source of scholarships after the
US government. In the last ten years, the Elks have given over two million
dollars in scholarships to Oregon high school seniors. These grants
are given regardless of race, creed or national origin and are based
on need, scholarship, and leadership.
The Harrison Fund for College Scholarships is specific to our lodge.
Each year we distribute about $7,000 in scholarships to local students
headed for college.

Wagner Fund for Youth Activities
Many years ago, with much foresight, our members started the Wagner
Memorial Fund for Youth Activities. This fund was stared with a modest
donation, but over the years (through additional donations from our
members and many fund raisers), this fund has grown to over $98,000.
What a great thing this has been for our Lodge. We are able to donate
about $6,000 each year to the youth activities in our area.
At the start of each Lodge year the Exalted Ruler appoints a committee
of three to oversee the affairs of the Wagner Fund. This committee
is charged with investing all funds donated, to see that no part of
the donated funds (i.e., the principal, as opposed to the interest)
are ever spent, and to keep accurate records of the fund’s finances.
At the end of the Lodge year the committee withdraws the earnings for
the year. This amount is used for donations to our local youth activities.
In recent years, we have supported activities such as:
•
Sponsorship of baseball teams all the way from American Legion down
to the T-ball teams.
•
Donation to the drug & alcohol free graduation parties for the
Phoenix and Ashland High Schools.
•
Donations to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Camp Fire Boys & Girls.
•
Donations to the Boys Club and Girls Club for summer “camperships.”
•
Donations to club sports at Ashland High School.

National Veterans Service Commission
In each of the 172 VA Medical Centers there is an Elk committee at
work. Literally, thousands of Elks and their families give generously
of their time, energy and resources so that the lives of our ill and
aging veterans will be enhanced.

Drug Awareness
Since its inception in 1983, the Elks Drug Awareness Program has worked
to prevent drug use by our youth through education. The Elks recognize
that they are not experts in the field of drug education. However, we
do have the resources -- in dollars, facilities and volunteers -- to
work with the experts to ensure that young people know the facts about
drugs. In addition to sponsoring seminars, workshops and drug-free functions,
we print and distribute literature developed by authorities on drug
awareness.

The Elks National Hoop Shoot
The Elks "Hoop Shoot" Free Throw Contest is the largest and
most visible of the many youth activities sponsored by Elks Lodges.
More than three million boys and girls, ages 8-13, will participate
this year. The Elks "Hoop Shoot" highlights the Elks commitment
to America's youth. From the millions of youngsters who participate
and advance through local, district, state and regional competition,
six national champions are named — one boy and one girl in each
of three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. The winners each receive
a trophy and their names are inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Parents accompany
contestants throughout the competition. The parents of finalists at
the state, regional and national levels attend the competitions as guests
of the Elks.

The Elks National Home
Early in the twentieth century, many Elks felt that the Order should
provide a home for aged members. After temporarily using a former hotel
in Bedford City, Virginia, the Elks erected a new building in 1916.
The Elks National Home is a classic structure on the edge of the Blue
Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It provides a home for Elks where they
live in complete freedom and personal dignity.
